Lindenhurst Home Insurance: When the Map and the Claims Don't Match
Last reviewed: July 2026. Data vintage noted per figure.
TL;DR
ZIP 11757 has one of the highest NFIP claims totals of any Long Island ZIP in our dataset: 4,757 claims on record, $165.4M paid, and 1,976 of those claims filed in 2012, the year of Sandy. But our July 2026 FEMA flood-layer query found that only about 14% of the village's mapped flood zones are mandatory-purchase. Most of the current map shows moderate or minimal risk, where flood insurance is generally optional with a standard mortgage. A map that doesn't require coverage is not the same as a history that says you're safe.

A high-claims ZIP with a mostly moderate-risk map
Lindenhurst's flood claims history is not subtle. FEMA's claims data puts 4,757 NFIP claims on record for ZIP 11757, with $165.4M paid out, among the highest totals of any Long Island ZIP in our full dataset. See the ranked table for how it compares.
Yet our July 2026 query of FEMA's National Flood Hazard Layer found a village map dominated by moderate and minimal risk: of 78 flood hazard polygons, only 11, about 14%, are mandatory-purchase AE, VE, or A zones. The other 66 map to the 0.2% annual chance shaded zone or minimal-hazard area, where a standard mortgage generally does not require flood insurance. We do not know the exact reason for the gap between the claims record and the current map, and we are not going to guess at one. What we can say is that both are real, and a homeowner who checks only the mandatory-purchase status is checking half the picture.
Breslau to Lindenhurst
The village began in 1873 under the name Breslau, for the Silesian city its early settlers came from, and was renamed Lindenhurst in 1891. It incorporated as a village in 1923 and marked its centennial in 2023. Today it covers about 3.81 square miles between Copiague, North Amityville, North Lindenhurst, and West Babylon, with the Great South Bay forming its southern edge. Lindenhurst station sits on the LIRR's Babylon Branch, the same commuter line that serves Babylon and Freeport.
The housing stock is old enough to raise the pre-FIRM question too. The median home dates to 1957, before FEMA published its first flood insurance rate maps in the 1970s. Median value runs $521,500 per Census ACS 2024 5-year estimates, across 9,117 housing units.
What Sandy did here
Sandy struck on October 30, 2012. According to Wikipedia's account, the storm flooded over half the village's streets, with water reaching up to 6 feet on the south side of Montauk Highway. Firefighters had to fight multiple fires while operating in 4 to 6 feet of water. It took roughly two days for the floodwater to recede, and residents north of Montauk Highway lost power for over a week.
The claims data lines up with that account. 1,976 of ZIP 11757's 4,757 recorded claims came from the 2012 loss year alone. Hurricane Irene the year before pushed 3 to 6 feet of surge onto the region's coast, causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage across New York City and Long Island's south shore.
What this means for your policy
Flood, especially in the canal blocks. A homeowners policy excludes flood damage everywhere on Long Island. In the mapped AE, VE, or A zones, a separate NFIP or private policy is mandatory with a federally backed mortgage. Outside those zones, coverage is optional, and Lindenhurst's claims history is the strongest argument for considering it anyway. Start with our flood insurance guide.
Wind, everywhere. Expect a percentage hurricane deductible of 1% to 5% of your dwelling limit, under the uniform statewide trigger New York adopted in February 2026. Our hurricane deductible guide works through the math by home value.
If the market says no. Canal-front blocks near the bay likely fall inside the C-MAP coastal band that applies across the south shore, with the program's other prerequisites and no guarantee of placement. NYPIUA backstops Suffolk County with its 2% hurricane deductible. A non-renewal notice starts a clock. Buying here? Run the pre-offer insurance checklist first.
Carriers. Appetite varies by block, elevation, and claims history, and it shifts often. We do not publish carrier lists because they go stale. An independent agent who writes the south shore regularly can tell you what is available for your specific address.
