Huntington Home Insurance: Long Island's Other Shore

Last reviewed: July 2026. Data vintage noted per figure.

TL;DR

Huntington sits on Long Island Sound, not the Atlantic Ocean or a south shore bay, and the insurance numbers show it. ZIP 11743 has 266 NFIP flood claims on record, versus 9,649 for Long Beach and 6,595 for Freeport, both more than 20 times Huntington's total. Our FEMA flood-layer query found only 21 mapped hazard polygons here, fewer than in any town we have profiled. That does not mean no exposure: the harbor still floods, the Village of Northport nearby carries nearly double Huntington's claims, and the same rules on mandatory flood coverage and hurricane deductibles still apply.

Why the Sound changes the math

Every town we have profiled so far, Long Beach, Freeport, Babylon, Southampton, faces the Atlantic Ocean or a south shore bay directly. Huntington does not. The hamlet sits on Huntington Harbor, which opens north into Long Island Sound, the water body between Long Island and Connecticut. The Town of Huntington's founding deed, dated April 2, 1653, describes the same shoreline: land from Cold Spring Harbor to Northport Harbor and the Sound to what is now Old Country Road, per the Huntington Historical Society.

That geography shows up directly in FEMA's numbers. Our July 2026 query of the National Flood Hazard Layer around Huntington Harbor and Halesite returned only 21 flood hazard polygons, 2 AE, 3 VE, 12 shaded moderate-risk, and 4 minimal-hazard. That is the smallest count the same query has returned for any town in this series. The claims record puts real distance behind it: ZIP 11743 has 266 NFIP claims on record, a small fraction of Long Beach's or Freeport's totals from the same dataset.

The hamlet, the town, and the village next door

"Huntington" means several different things at once, and the difference matters for insurance. The Town of Huntington counted 204,127 residents in the 2020 census, a large municipality covering many separate communities. The hamlet of Huntington itself, the unincorporated center on the harbor, has an estimated 19,948 residents per Census ACS 2024 5-year figures, with 8,393 housing units and a median home value of $767,000. Huntington station, the eastern terminus of electrified service on the LIRR's Port Jefferson Branch, anchors the hamlet's commuter life.

A few miles east sits the Village of Northport, a separately incorporated municipality with its own government and its own flood record. Its ZIP carries 492 NFIP claims, nearly double Huntington's own total. Neither ZIP looks anything like the south shore, but they are not identical to each other either. Confirm the specific ZIP and flood zone for your address at msc.fema.gov rather than treating the whole north shore as one market.

2012 is Huntington's largest loss year on record too, the same pattern every town in this series shows, just at a different scale: 43 claims that year against thousands on the south shore. A year earlier, Irene pushed 3 to 6 feet of surge into the region in August 2011, with the property damage, hundreds of millions of dollars of it, concentrated on the south shore. Figures from our own FEMA claims data as of July 2026, dollars rounded. See the full ranked list in our Long Island flood claims table.

What this means for your policy

Flood, if you are near the harbor. A homeowners policy excludes flood damage everywhere on Long Island, harbor-front Huntington included. In the mapped AE and VE zones, a separate NFIP or private policy is mandatory with a federally backed mortgage. With a median build year of 1956, Huntington's housing stock predates FEMA's first flood maps too, so ask your agent how a pre-FIRM home is rated. Start with our flood insurance guide.

Wind, wherever you are. Expect a percentage hurricane deductible of 1% to 5% of your dwelling limit, under the uniform statewide trigger New York adopted in February 2026. Our hurricane deductible guide works through the math by home value.

If the market says no. We could not confirm whether Huntington's coastal blocks fall inside C-MAP's eligibility band. The criteria NY DFS publishes are written for the south shore, and nothing we found extends them to Long Island Sound in the same terms. Ask an independent agent directly whether C-MAP applies to your address, and treat NYPIUA as the fallback that does not depend on the answer. A non-renewal notice starts a clock either way.

Carriers. Appetite varies by block, elevation, and claims history, and it shifts often, even in a lower-exposure market like this one. We do not publish carrier lists because they go stale. An independent agent who writes the north shore regularly can tell you what is available for your address now.

Frequently asked questions

Does Huntington flood as much as Long Beach or Freeport?
No, and the gap is large. FEMA claims data shows 266 NFIP claims on record for ZIP 11743 against 9,649 for Long Beach and 6,595 for Freeport, both more than 20 times Huntington's total. The geography is different: Huntington Harbor opens to Long Island Sound, not the open Atlantic or a south shore bay, and the claims record tracks that difference. Less exposure is not zero exposure, so check your address at msc.fema.gov before assuming anything.
Is Huntington the same as Northport for insurance purposes?
No. Northport is a separately incorporated village a few miles east, with its own government, and its ZIP's flood claims record runs nearly double Huntington's, 492 against 266 per FEMA claims data. Confirm your specific ZIP and flood zone rather than treating 'the north shore' as one market.
What flood zone is Huntington Harbor in?
A mix of zones in a small mapped area. Our July 2026 FEMA flood-layer query of the Huntington Harbor and Halesite area returned only 21 flood hazard polygons, the smallest count for any town we have profiled. The high-risk AE and VE zones sit tight against the harbor edge. Check your exact address at msc.fema.gov, since zone lines run block by block even in a smaller mapped area.
Do Huntington homeowners qualify for C-MAP?
We could not confirm this either way. NY DFS documents C-MAP's coastal eligibility band for Long Island's south shore in specific distance terms, but nothing we found extends those criteria to Long Island Sound communities in the same way. If a carrier declines your home, ask an independent agent directly whether C-MAP applies to your address. NYPIUA remains the fallback either way, and Suffolk County NYPIUA policies carry a 2% hurricane deductible under current product information.
My Huntington home was built in 1956. Does that matter for flood insurance?
It can. A 1956 build date predates FEMA's first flood insurance rate maps from the 1970s, the same pre-FIRM question that applies on the south shore. If your home sits in one of the harbor's mapped zones, ask your agent how a pre-FIRM structure is rated under Risk Rating 2.0.
